WASHINGTON, D.C. — The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) has issued the following statement for America’s National Day of Service in honor of Martin Luther King Day 2021:
Today, LULAC members throughout our country and Puerto Rico along with all who believe in social justice and equality join together to remember the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, one of our nation’s most important civil rights leaders. A cornerstone of his life’s teachings was the admonishment, ‘Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.’
Indeed, that is the calling LULAC salutes in 2021 as we confront the effects of a pandemic that is taking a deadly toll on our communities. Our health care and food production workers are on the front line daily, teachers are working hard to stay connected with students, and social workers are urgently reaching out to the elderly isolated from their loved ones. Each of us, young or old, can serve to the extent our individual resources and abilities allow.
“Dr. King’s fight for racial and social justice is what has inspired me since I was in junior high school until today,” says Domingo Garcia, LULAC National President. “No matter how difficult the opposition, how rigged the rules, the fight for equal rights and opportunities for all Americans is my lifetime goal. Today, we have not yet met his goals, but every year we get closer to making America a country of justice for all,” added Garcia.
While millions of people are celebrating the spirit of selfless service, we must never forget the forces that Dr. King confronted of those who opposed his struggle for civil rights. Today, we must remain awake and vigilant because we are again faced with the same threats to stop the full realization of Dr. King’s dream for our great nation.
LULAC celebrates what would have been his 92nd birthday and may we pause today to reflect on ways we can continue on towards that day of fulfilling the promise of America for all.
